A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful country of Kenya. This was my first time traveling to the continent of Africa and words cannot adequately describe its natural beauty and vast landscape. On this trip, I visited three different areas in Kenya: the city of Nairobi, Maasai Mara (Masai Mara) National Reserve Park, and the Island of Lamu. In Nairobi, I visited the giraffe center and an elephant sanctuary. I also sampled authentic Kenyan food and drinks at a few local restaurants. After that, I toured a few markets and tried to flex my negotiation skills to purchase authentic gifts (and failed miserably, lol). Next was the three-day Safari at the Maasai Mara National Reserve Park. Luckily, I saw three of the big five animals (buffalo, elephant and lion; the rhino and leopard were hiding) and visited a local Maasai village to learn of their culture. Finally, the trip ended with a few days on Lamu Island just off the coast of Kenya where I experienced first hand the Swahili culture and island life. Interestingly enough, there are no cars on the island because the streets are very narrow. People mainly travel by boat, foot or use donkeys. Although all of these places were in Kenya, each offered a very different and unique experience that I will never forget. Take a look at some of my favorite moments captured on photo. Karibu Kenya!
